Anthony Morgan, CEO of renewable energy specialist, Newform Energy, argues that solar technology can underpin the future of the UK’s increasing energy supply demands: “Renewable energy sources, and the technologies with which to optimise their capture, are essential if we are to ensure the lights stay on and Britain remains open for business.”
A recent parliamentary report by the Environmental Audit Committee has found that a £100 billion hole has opened up in the UK’s green energy finances, with investment in renewable power generation such as solar panels and wind turbines running at less than half the level required this decade.
The Government’s inconsistent approach to supporting green energy is blamed for the lack of financial backing, the report stating that investment in low carbon energy generation is running at “less than half” of the £200 billion needed between 2010 and 2020 if the UK is to reduce its carbon emissions sufficiently to enable the country to meet legally binding environmental targets and play its part in limiting global warming to 2OC.
